  • After being destroyed by fire several times, the Saga Castle History Museum was reconstructed in exactly the same place and formation as its original. The Castle is known as one of the largest wooden reconstructions in Japan. Samurai Lords resided and governed from this place until the end of the Edo period. The overall size of the building is 2,500m². The hallway is 45m long with tatami mats and the main hall has 320 tatami mats giving a true Japanese atmosphere. The exhibitions in regard of Saga’s history and heroes are available throughout the building. Volunteer guides are available for visitors who seek further information. An English audio guide is also available.

  • Introducing future generations to the historically invaluable buildings that still remain in Saga City and serving as the city asset equipped for and open to the public, five separate structures are together known as the Saga City Cultural Museum. First, the old Koga Bank preserves Taisho era western style architecture.
    Secondly, the old Koga Residence, home of the former bank president, is said to be in the style of a Meiji era businessman’s home. Next is the relocated and restored Ushijima Residence.
    It is the oldest merchant’s residence in Shimoimashuku-machi. Another interesting building is the old Sansho Bank where you can feel and reminded of how a bank used to be in Meiji period, The old Fukuda Residence shows you a modern Japanese–style of architecture from the Taisho period.
    These 5 historical buildings outside of the old Saga Castle walls are combined and known as the place of “the Saga Hina-Doll festival”, which held every spring.

  • In 210 B.C, the First Emperor of Sin (China) ordered Jyofuku to look for “a medicine for eternal life” and he landed in Saga. Stories about Jyofuku remain as the Legend of Jyofuku around Saga City. During his journey in Saga, he found “Furofuki” as “a medicine for eternal life”.
    Exhibitions of the legends of Jyofuku and information in how to keep a long and healthy life are available in the site. Visitors can also enjoy a botanical garden, where 500 kinds of medicinal herbs, plants and flowers are planted all year round.

  • Saga City is the birthplace of the infamous Shigenobu Okuma, who was the founder of Waseda University. He is nationally known as a great politician. During his lifetime, he studied International Affair and other cultures, which brought him as one of the great leaders in politics after the opening of Japan to the world.
    This memorial site defines his influential character as well as his remarkable historical records. The site displays the original house where he was born. It was built in the early 19th century. This building as well as the the samurai style house are maintained as a national historic site.

  • It was built in 1927(Showa era). The site exhibits arts and achievements of the Nabeshima clan from the Edo period. These arts are highly valuable and are considered the best arts during Edo era. The site also holds large exhibitions five times a year to show ancient daily living tools, furniture, and historical records of Lord Nabeshima.
    This historic site is known as one of places for “the Saga Hina-Doll festival” every spring.

  • Tsunetami Sano helped contribute in the establishment of modern Japan. He was a delegate to the international exhibition in Paris (1867) and in Wien (1873), in which during that time he was able to collect information and knowledge from all over the world.
    Japan became a member of the Red Cross in 1886 and he was the first president of the Red Cross Japan. This museum was the first Japan Navy office in 1858 built by the Saga Clan. The site also displays historical records of Tsunetami Sano and his works.

  • The Saga Clan, the Nabeshimas, was very powerful at the end of the Edo period. The Saga Clan had obtained advanced technology from outside Japan and contributed to establish modern Japan. This shrine is dedicated to the Nabeshima clan and their works.
    Every New Year’s day visitors come to this shrine to pay respect to the Nabeshimas. Visitors can also find a large cannon on the location. This cannon was made in the Edo period and displayed as a symbol of the best technology at that time.

  • Kakurin-Tei was reconstructed and was called “The Teahouse in Kouno” This place was Lord Naomasa Nabeshima’s second house and was used as the guesthouse.
    This teahouse has a unique formation and located overlooking clear water pond with pine trees and Japanese apricot tress planted nearby. Visitors can also enjoy Japanese traditional Tea ceremonies.

Nature


  • The Ariake Inland Sea (Ariake-kai)

    In the Ariake Inland Sea, the difference between low and high tidal level is about 6m, thus, the biggest in Japan. The tidelands (mud flats) spread several miles offshore, with a variety of creatures (fish and shell fish) living here. One famous species called “Mutsugorou or mud-skippers” can be found in the area. The sea is also rich in Nori (seaweed) and seaweed beds can be seen in winter. Gathering the shellfish is a very popular family activity that visitors enjoy in spring.
  • The Kawakami Ravine (Kawakami-kyo)

    The Kawakami Ravine is called the “Arashi-Yama of Kyushu”, because the scenery is similar to the place of the same name in Kyoto. Tourists can enjoy Cherry blossoms in spring, colored leaves in fall, hundreds of carp-shaped streamers swimming in the sky in April and May. Visitors can also ejoy fire works in summer.
  • Shoukai Lift Bridge over the Chikugo River (Chikugo-gawa Shokai-kyo)

    The Shoukai Bridge traverses from Saga to Fukuoka Prefecture over the Chikugo River. It is the longest river in Kyushu. The bridge is known for its vertical lift as the middle part opens up to let ships through. The vertical lift of the bridge is at 23 m high, which is the highest in Asia. In the past, trains also run on the bridge, but now it is only a footbridge. The bridge has a reputation for a spot for beautiful sunsets. From May to June visitors can cruise boats to view the sunset.
  • Kouno Park (Kouno Kouen)

    Kouno Park was built in 1846 and was a second house of the lord of the Saga Clan, Naomasa Nabeshima. It is a well-known place to enjoy cherry blossoms, with many people visiting during cherry blossom season. An amusement park and a small zoo are located nearby. Visitors can also find a Dragonfly Pond where you can see thousands of dragonflies in summer with over 40 different kinds.
  • Tafusegawa Sakuramichi Promenade (Tafuse-gawa Sakura-michi)

    The promenade along Tafuse River runs north to south in Saga City. When the cherry trees are in full bloom, it is a great spot to view and enjoy cherry blossoms in spring.

  • Tenzan Ski Resort is the only full-service ski resort available in Kyushu and is covered with artificial snow. The resort opens from the middle of November to the end of March. Ski runs are located at 700 to 900m high and 600 to 1,000 m long. The resort offers special programs for groups of foreigners. Visitors can also enjoy various activities besides skiing such as snowball fighting and snow-sledding.
    While during summer time, grass-skiing and mountain hiking are popular. The area also provides three tennis courts and a swimming pool. Besides various activities, visitors can also enjoy spectacular scenery with over 4,000 lavender plants bloom at the same time.

    There are three full-service Golf Courses in Saga City. “Hokuzan Country Club” offers various routes and visitors will sure to find it exciting. “Fuji Country Club” has good hill courses and visitors can enjoy the hot springs nearby as well.   • Visitors can find seven gigantic rocks in the mountain. In the past, people used to believe that God inhabits these rocks. Each rock has interesting background stories. Visitors can various sport activities such as hiking and fishing in the hill.

  • This ranch is located on the hillsides in Mitsuse village with a size of over 850,000 square meters. It was set up in a French style ranch for outdoors purposes. Visitors can feed and pet small animals like rabbits and goats. Other activities such as grass skiing, doing a fitness path, and dining in a French are available.
    The ranch also provides hotel for visitors who choose to stay over night. This is a popular place for family activities and it typically crowded with thousands of visitors on weekends.

  • There are ten different kinds of apple trees available in Saga City. These trees can be found in ten separate apple orchards. Harvest seasons are varied, so visitors can enjoy apple picking from late August to the end of November. Visitors are allowed to eat as many apples as they like. The cost of taking a bag of apples with is only \600 for 1 kg.

  • In Saga, peach trees typically grow in green houses. Besides picking fruits in mid June, visitors can also view peach flowers in March. Some places offer visitors to own a tree and allow them to pick the fruit. Some trees are planted outside the green house and visitors may also pick their fruits.

  • In Saga city, visitors can find one thousands chestnut trees grow in a 118,800 m2 wide area. The harvest season for chestnuts is at the end of August to end of September. The orchard opens on weekends and national holidays during this time. Typical Japanese chestnuts are big and sweet. This orchard is crowded with visitors during harvest season. Visitors can also take a bag of chestnut for only \700 for 1 kg.
